As I sat in my seventh grade science class, I tiredly watched my classmates display their science fair projects. Presentations about which laundry detergent works best and the density of objects like eggs and oranges, nearly bored me to tears. After all of my classmates finished their presentations, my teacher Ms. Arriola told me to stay after class. Why does she want me to stay after class? Did she hate my project? Did I do something wrong? My mind raced with all the possibilities and probabilities behind her reasoning for wanting to speak to me. I gazed as all my peers left the classroom and slowly made my way up to the front of the room. â€Å"†¦, I found your experiment on the effects of permafrost on the germination rate of seeds,†¦show more content†¦The atmosphere was tense. In my head, I constantly repeated: Hello, my name is †¦ and today I will be discussing the effects of permafrost on the germination rate of seeds. I reiterated my opening remarks in my head as I shook like a coffee addict missing their morning mocha latte. I tried not to think about my nervous tendencies, and glanced around at my competition as a bead of sweat formulated on my forehead. The boy across from me had a presentation regarding the placebo effect, and the girl next to me had a rather unappealing project about the growth of plants using different fertilizers. In a perfectly clumsy manner, I knocked my board over twice as I tried to move it away from the edge. My board seemed to mimic my inner most thoughts. Why are we here? Can we go home yet? Why are there so many people here? I felt obligated to try my best, even if it meant sacrificing five hours of my day. I decided to read instead of hear about a kid’s project testing buoyancy in salt water, when I was suddenly interrupted by the first of three judges. To me, all of the judges looked exactly the same: old, unenthusiastic, and unimpressed. In order to succeed, I have to make a sacrifice. My sacrifice for the week was getting up at five to work out in the gym for two long, hard hours. If this sounds drastic to you, then how come there were twelve of us in the gym every morning? Because we all have dreams and we want them to come true. The coaches and teachers at A.B.A. helped me realize how I was going to achieve my dreams. They warned me about the temptations drugs and alcohol. They told me about crucial decisions I would make that would have a resounding effect on accomplishing my dream. What I admired most about them was that they never said that I wouldnt accomplish my dreams. Many times, people give reasons for failure: either you are too slow, too little, or too fat something to prevent you from succeeding. You must prove to these people that you can achieve whatever you want as long as you work hard and dont forget your dreams. They encouraged me to work relentlessly at my dreams and to believe that theyll come true. As I look back at A.B.A., I see how much it influenced my life. Since returning, I have continued to spend my days working as hard as I possibly could to achieve my dreams. All the hard work and dedication is starting to pay off. I have received letters from two Division I basketball programs. Almost all my decisions now are made while reflecting on my dreams. Im willing to go out and do whatever it takes to accomplish these dreams. I leave you now with something that one of my teammates, whom I the respect and view as a great friend, said to me: There are three types of dreamers in this world: those who talk about their dreams, those who wonder how nice it would be to accomplish those dreams, and those who go out and work to achieve those dreams.
